REAL Fathers Program
Resilient, Engaged, and Loving (REAL) Fathers is a comprehensive community-based mentoring program rooted in evidence and designed to address a critical phase in the lives of young men: their transition into fatherhood. This program specifically focuses on young fathers between the ages of 16 and 24, recognizing the significant influence they have as both partners and fathers. The overarching aim is to equip them with the knowledge, skills, and support necessary to foster positive family dynamics and contribute to the overall health and well-being of their households.
At the heart of the REAL Fathers program is a young fathers approach, which acknowledges and leverages the unique qualities and potential of young men. Rather than viewing fatherhood as a challenge, the program frames it as an opportunity for growth and engagement. It is built on the understanding that young men, when guided effectively, can play a great role in promoting positive parenting practices, healthy relationships, and violence-free homes. The program’s primary intervention is mentorship, pairing young fathers with older, more experienced men from their communities. These mentors serve as role models, offering guidance, emotional support, and practical advice to help young fathers navigate the complexities of parenthood.
A key aspect of the program’s approach is the mentoring process, which is supported by seven carefully structured group sessions and community activities. These sessions cover essential topics such as positive parenting, gender equity, conflict resolution, and child protection. Young fathers are mentored by older men and guided through the importance of being present, emotionally engaged with their children, and supportive of their partners. Additionally, they learn how to build non-violent, nurturing family environments.
The REAL Fathers Program recognizes the value of working with young fathers early in their lives, while their expectations, attitudes, and behaviors towards relationships are still developing. The program fosters “positive masculinity,” encouraging men to learn effective communication and problem-solving skills, which are vital for long-term family well-being.
Through the intervention components—including mentor training, home visits, group meetings, community campaigns, and celebrations—the program has shown promising results. Fathers who participate demonstrate increased confidence in non-violent discipline, improved father-child bonding, and better couple communication. There has also been a significant shift in gender-equitable attitudes about caregiving and household chores, as well as a notable decrease in attitudes that justify IPV.
Currently, the REAL Fathers program is operational in eight diverse districts across Uganda, namely Amuria, Soroti, Katakwi, Serere, Masindi, Kiryandongo, Kikuube, and Hoima. Each district represents a unique socio-economic and cultural context, yet the program’s core principles remain the same—supporting young fathers through mentorship and community engagement. Through adapting to the needs and circumstances of each region, the program ensures that its interventions are culturally relevant and accessible to all participants. Through challenging traditional gender norms and promoting shared parenting responsibilities, REAL Fathers help to create an environment where women and girls can thrive alongside their male counterparts, as well as their children.
