Advocating for Child Safety at Bogota Ministerial Conference

Bantwana Initiative Uganda is deeply committed to the mission of ending violence against children and creating a safe, nurturing environment where they can thrive. This commitment was underscored as our Executive Director, Susan Kajura, represented us at the Global Ministerial Conference in Bogotá, Colombia, joining leaders from around the world in a crucial dialogue on child well-being. The Africa Satellite Event provided a valuable platform for collaboration, enabling participants to share insights, develop strategies, and reaffirm their dedication to the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child. The event was attended by prominent figures, including Uganda’s Minister Hon. Dr. Balaam Barugahara, alongside other key stakeholders invested in driving progress for Africa’s youth.

The importance of such gatherings cannot be overstated. Violence against children remains a pressing issue that affects millions, not only in Uganda but across the globe. The forms this violence takes are varied—physical, emotional, sexual abuse, neglect, and exploitation—all of which leave long-lasting impacts on children’s mental, physical, and emotional health. The detrimental effects are felt not just by the children themselves but by their families and communities, creating cycles of trauma and socioeconomic instability that hinder progress. Addressing this issue is imperative for building resilient, thriving communities that prioritize children’s rights and development.

Bantwana’s approach to combating violence against children centers on community-led and evidence-based strategies. We understand that real change begins at the grassroots level, where communities play a pivotal role in shaping the environment in which children grow up. Programs that promote shared gender roles, positive parenting, and violence prevention are at the core of our mission. Through fostering a culture where caregiving and protective responsibilities are shared equitably among men and women, we work to shift norms that may otherwise perpetuate violence and inequality.

Our initiatives are built on partnerships that amplify impact. In attendance were esteemed organizations such as the Population Council, FAWE Uganda, REPSSI, The AfriChild Centre, UNICEF Uganda, the World Health Organization, UNESCO, and ChildFund International allows us to extend the reach and effectiveness of our programs. These alliances not only bring together resources and expertise but also foster innovation and sustainability in the fight against violence.

Through education campaigns and community workshops, we empower parents and caregivers with positive parenting techniques. These sessions emphasize non-violent discipline, effective communication, and empathy, ensuring that children grow up in an environment that supports their emotional and physical well-being. Programs tailored to teach shared gender roles also play an essential role in reducing gender-based violence, promoting mutual respect, and fostering partnerships within households.

The participation of Hon. Dr. Balaam Barugahara and other distinguished leaders at the Global Ministerial Conference is a testament to the growing recognition of this issue at national and regional levels. The event in Bogotá served as a reminder that ending violence against children is not just an organizational mission but a collective global commitment. It is only through coordinated efforts that meaningful change can be achieved, supported by policies, resources, and community action that reinforce child protection measures.

Bantwana’s presence at this international forum reinforces our resolve to be part of the solution. By engaging with policymakers, researchers, and practitioners from various countries, we continue to adapt and refine our strategies to reflect best practices and emerging knowledge in the field. Our participation ensures that the voices of children and communities in Uganda remain an integral part of the global conversation on child protection.

Together with our dedicated partners and the invaluable support of stakeholders, Bantwana remains focused on advancing sustainable solutions that safeguard children’s futures. The work is far from over, but events like the Global Ministerial Conference provide a beacon of hope and a reminder that progress is not only possible but already underway. Through collective action, we can honor the commitments laid out in the African Charter and ensure a brighter, safer future for every child.
