Securing her Grandchildren’s Future

At 62 years old, Emelda, a resident of Harugongo Sub County, is more than just a grandmother, she is a pillar of strength for her family and community. As the primary caregiver for her two grandchildren, aged 9 and 14, Emelda has faced numerous challenges balancing household responsibilities, financial stability, and ensuring the children’s well-being. But through Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) and Positive Parenting Group (PPG) sessions, she has transformed her approach to caregiving, gaining financial independence and valuable parenting skills.

To support her family, Emelda runs a small shop, selling household food items like tomatoes, bananas, rice, sugar, and soda. However, before joining three different VSLAs, managing her business was a struggle. She often lacked capital and faced financial instability.

Through the VSLAs, Emelda learned how to save, access small loans, and reinvest in her shop. She now budgets effectively, avoids unnecessary expenses, and secures steady income for both her business and household needs. This financial stability ensures her grandchildren have food, school fees, and other basic necessities.

Beyond finances, Emelda also attends Positive Parenting Group (PPG) sessions, which have equipped her with skills to create a nurturing home environment. The sessions have helped her develop patience, understand child development, and improve communication with her grandchildren.

These sessions have taught me the importance of respecting each other as a family and how to handle challenges without conflict,” Emelda explains.

PPG sessions have also introduced her to referral pathways, which are critical in addressing child protection cases in the community. She has learned how to discreetly handle cases of child sexual abuse (CSA), ensuring victims get the right help while maintaining their safety and dignity.

For Emelda, the knowledge gained from VSLAs and PPG sessions is not just for her, it’s for future generations. She actively teaches her children and grandchildren about saving and financial planning, hoping they, too, can build sustainable livelihoods.

I want my children to be able to support their own families better,” she says.

Emelda’s journey is a testament to the power of community-driven programs. Through her self-drive and the initiative, caregivers like her are empowered with financial literacy through VSLA’s, parenting skills as well child protection knowledge and referral pathways for CSA.

Studies show that strengthening caregivers leads to better child outcomes. According to a study done by the Ministry of Gender Labor and Social Development in 2019, children raised in stable, financially secure homes are more likely to stay in school, avoid early marriage, and grow into responsible adults.

With her business thriving, her grandchildren supported, and her community benefiting from her knowledge, Emelda embodies the true impact of empowering caregivers. Her story highlights how small interventions can create lasting change, not just for individuals, but for entire families and communities.
