While she was in S4, Anita’s life took an unexpected turn when she was just 17 years old. At 27 now, she reflects on the journey that led her here. It all began on a weekend when Anita realized she was pregnant. That day was supposed to be a break from school, but it quickly turned into a life-altering moment which led her to eventually drop out. The first person she thought to confide in was her partner, however no sooner had he heard the news, than he vanished from her life for good leaving Anita to face the daunting reality alone.
With nowhere else to turn, Anita broke the news to her parents. Their reaction was harsh and filled with disappointment, pushing Anita to the brink. Feeling overwhelmed and rejected, she made the difficult decision to run away from home and in her attempt to seek refuge, she found a safe space in a friend’s home, where she stayed until her baby was born.
Word of the birth eventually reached her parents, and their hearts softened. Slowly, they welcomed Anita and her newborn back into their home. Despite this reconciliation, Anita knew she had to be self-reliant. Determined to provide for her child, she took on shifts at local road tolls and tended to a small garden outside their home to grow and sell crops. Her days were long and tiresome, but she was determined in her efforts. Often, she would leave her child with neighbors or sometimes even take them along to work, balancing her responsibilities as best as she could. During this time, Anita managed to save money and attend two years of collage in a nearby school.
Nine years later, Anita’s life saw another twist of fate. She met Peter, a 37-year-old boda boda rider in their community of Bembe Parish. Their acquaintance blossomed into a relationship, and in October 2021, Anita welcomed her second child. Peter was initially supportive of Anita and their new family, but as time passed and he fathered children with other women, his support reduced. Despite these challenges, Anita and Peter continued to live together.
In March 2024, Anita started attending teenage mother group sessions, where she learned about “The Power of Being Bold.” These sessions were a turning point for her. “I now know I have to be bold in everything. Whether it’s at home, at work, or in class, I need to be bold!” she exclaimed with newfound confidence.
Through the Power Analysis sessions, Anita realized the importance of standing up for herself in every situation. She understood that empowerment begins with self-advocacy and the courage to assert her worth, regardless of the circumstances. Her journey, though fraught with difficulties, has been a testament to her resilience and determination to create a better life for herself and her children.
