Bantwana Initiative Uganda (BIU) is dedicated to employing positive parenting principles as a cornerstone in the fight against violence against children (VAC) and child sexual abuse (CSA) across Western Uganda. Through a comprehensive and multi-dimensional approach deeply rooted in positive parenting, BIU endeavors to instigate normative changes at various levels: individual, family, school, and community.
This approach is grounded in a socio-ecological model, recognizing the interplay between individual behaviors and broader social and environmental factors. At the heart of BIU’s strategy lies the SAFE Toolkit, a meticulously developed resource honed over a span of 12 years. Aligned with the INSPIRE framework, this toolkit serves as a comprehensive guide aimed at preventing child sexual abuse comprehensively. By integrating positive parenting principles into every facet of their work, BIU strives to create safer and more nurturing environments for children, promoting their well-being and safeguarding their rights.
Over a 24-month program, BIU anticipates three outcomes: stakeholder affirmation of the toolkit’s impact, equipping duty bearers with knowledge and positive attitudes, and establishing robust internal systems for sustained operation. Through partnering with district governments and aligning with national policies, BIU ensures broader endorsement and implementation of child protection measures.
BIU’s expansion efforts include positive parenting training sessions, empowering caregivers, and teachers to enhance communication and supervision, while caregiver champions promote norm shifts and positive parenting practices. Community dialogue meetings facilitate discussions on VAC and CSA prevention, involving local government and community leaders.
Progress updates highlight the significant impact of BIU’s SAFE Program in fostering positive parenting practices. Through extensive training sessions reaching 2,719 caregivers across 39 communities, BIU surpassed targets, leading to a remarkable 61% decrease in violent discipline and a 57% improvement in caregiver-child communication. Moreover, the awareness of child abuse risks surged by 83%, resulting in the reporting of 571 cases, indicative of enhanced vigilance and proactive measures.
The implementation of Bantwana Parenting Sessions not only equipped caregivers with practical skills such as budgeting and anger management but also fostered self-efficacy and social support. Qualitative data underscored the transformative effects of these sessions, with participants expressing increased confidence and strengthened familial bonds.
Moving forward, BIU plans to address cultural norms and dynamics, ensuring a holistic approach to positive parenting and community well-being. Through these initiatives, BIU aims to create lasting change in Western Uganda and beyond, breaking the cycle of vulnerability for every child and strengthening the fabric of society.
